About the Course
From Basics to Mastery: Sewing and Pattern Reading Made Simple
Whether you’re upcycling an old favorite or creating something brand new, machine sewing and pattern reading are essential skills. Comic-Con costumes, trendy mini backpacks, and unique summer outfits all start with the same foundation: the basics.
In this 16-week class, you’ll learn how to source materials on a budget, maintain your sewing machine, and master pattern reading. You won’t need a fancy serger or embroidery machine (though I’ll admit I have both, and they’re a lot of fun!). We’ll start with a firm understanding of your sewing machine—how it works, how to maintain it, and troubleshooting tips. By the second class, you’ll be sewing, so be ready to jump in and learn quickly!
Next, we’ll explore fabrics and their role in clothing design. You’ll discover why drape, stretch, and salvage are important and how they affect fit and movement. Expect some hands-on experimentation, including intentionally tearing and testing fabric to understand its properties.
The most exciting part comes when we dive into pattern reading. With my guidance, you’ll choose a pattern and learn to navigate it step by step. This is where the challenge begins, but it’s also where the fun truly starts!
Finally, it’s time to create. Combining everything you’ve learned, you’ll bring your vision to life—whether it’s a Comic-Con costume, a unique outfit, or something entirely your own.
This class is designed to build your skills, spark your creativity, and give you the confidence to tackle any sewing project. Let’s sew something amazing together!
