Science Isn't Just Something Kids Learn. It's Something They DO!

Your child watches a science video.

They learn a few new vocabulary words.

They answer questions about what they watched.

Lesson complete!

But what if they could actually see that science concept in action?

What if they could test it, experiment with it, and discover why something happens instead of simply memorizing what happens?

That's where hands-on science can make a difference.

And the good news? You don't need a fancy science lab or expensive equipment to make it happen!

1. Let Them Discover the Answer

Kids are naturally curious. They want to know why things float, how plants grow, and what makes things move.

Instead of always giving them the answer, let them investigate!

Learning about density? Gather a few household objects and predict which will sink or float.

Studying chemical reactions? Try a simple, age-appropriate experiment that lets them observe a reaction firsthand.

The goal isn't just to get the right answer. It's to encourage curiosity, observation, and discovery.

2. Don't Skip the "Why?"

Completing an experiment is exciting, but some of the most valuable learning happens afterward.

Ask your child:

"What did you notice?"

"Did anything surprise you?"

"Why do you think that happened?"

"What would you change if you tried it again?"

These conversations help children connect what they observed to the science concept they're learning.

They also give you a glimpse into what your child actually understands.

3. Make Science Part of Everyday Life

Science doesn't have to end when the experiment is over.

Look for opportunities to connect what your child learned to the world around them.

Studying weather? Talk about the clouds forming outside.

Learning about forces and motion? Explore what happens when a toy car rolls down ramps of different heights.

Studying ecosystems? Take a walk and talk about how plants, animals, and their environment depend on one another.

When kids recognize science in everyday life, it becomes more than another school subject.

It becomes something they can explore!

Bringing Hands-On Science Into Your Homeschool

That's exactly what inspired us to create FA Boost Science Level 1A, FunCation Academy's new hands-on online homeschool science curriculum!

Designed for students ages 8–13, FA Boost Science combines online learning with opportunities to experiment, investigate, and explain what they discover.

Students explore science through:

  • 55 Core Lessons featuring instructional videos, printable worksheets, online games, and interactive Teach Backs.

  • 150 Hands-on science labs that help students explore concepts through real experiments.

  • 11 Science Units covering topics such as life science, weather, chemistry, forces, and motion.

  • Interactive Teach Backs that encourage students to explain what they've learned in their own words.

  • Two dissection labs, including an earthworm dissection!

Many activities use accessible materials, making hands-on science easier to incorporate into your homeschool routine.

And Science is just one part of FA Boost!

For only $18/month per student, families get access to Math, Reading & Vocabulary, Grammar & Writing, Spelling, and Science.

We believe students should have opportunities to do more than complete assignments.

They should explore, question, experiment, and understand what they're learning.
